Canada’s Danielle Dorris secured a silver medal in the women’s 50-metre butterfly S5-7 final at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Walnut, Calif., marking Canada’s first medal of the event. Dorris finished with a time of 34.42 seconds, just shy of her own world record of 32.99 seconds. Despite leading the race, she was edged out for the gold by Katie Kubiak of the United States, who set a new world record in the morning preliminaries. Dorris expressed her satisfaction with the result, highlighting the significance of winning Canada’s first medal. The event uses a points system to determine winners based on how close swimmers’ times are to the world record standard for their specific class. Dorris, born with bilateral radial dysplasia, will turn 24 in September. In another race, Dorris contributed to a Canadian record performance in the mixed 4×100 medley 34-point relay, clinching a bronze medal with her teammates. Sebastian Massabie from Toronto also secured a bronze in the men’s 50 fly S5-7 final. Nicholas Bennett and Ken Stroud also delivered strong performances, securing silver and bronze medals, respectively. The competition serves as a crucial preparation for future Paralympic events, with athletes aiming to excel in similar conditions.
