“Novel ‘Stratus’ Covid Strain Spreads with Unique Symptoms”

Published on

A novel variation of the Covid virus is rapidly spreading, distinguished by unique symptoms that warrant attention. Concern has escalated regarding the emergence of the new strain, dubbed ‘Stratus’, which encompasses two variants known as XFG and XFG.3. Initially detected in January this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated XFG for ‘monitoring’ by June due to its escalating global prevalence.

As of 3 September, the UK Health Security Agency reported a 7.1% increase in Covid cases across England compared to the preceding week, with the impact of the XFG strain remaining uncertain. In Ireland, health authorities documented 425 fresh infections in the first week of September, predominantly linked to the XFG variant.

Typically, Covid symptoms mirror those of common respiratory ailments like the flu, featuring fever, cough, sneezing, or a runny nose, with variations in severity across cases. However, a distinctive early indication of Stratus is a hoarse or raspy voice, potentially preceding traditional Covid symptoms, making it easily overlooked.

Medical professionals have also identified additional symptoms associated with Stratus, including nasal congestion, sore throat, gastrointestinal disturbances, and fatigue. Dr. Nye stated that individuals infected with this version commonly experience intense throat discomfort and hoarseness, in contrast to the more general symptoms like cough, fever, and body aches.

He emphasized that the new strain appears to elude the immune system even in individuals with previous exposure, diminishing the efficacy of existing vaccines and underscoring the importance of regular vaccination against the latest coronavirus strains. Infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Chin-Hong cautioned that Stratus presents a broader spectrum of symptoms compared to earlier variants, with increased transmissibility heightening the likelihood of widespread transmission, particularly as schools resume sessions.

Dr. Chin-Hong highlighted an uptick in sore throats among older unvaccinated individuals, emphasizing the heightened transmissibility of the new strain, potentially leading to a surge in infections, notably as children return to school.
