British Woman Detained in Iran Receives IV Treatment

Published on

A British woman detained in an Iranian prison on espionage charges is now receiving medical treatment through an IV as her health condition worsens.

Lindsay and Craig Foreman, a couple aged 52, were arrested on January 3 in Iran while on a motorcycle journey across the globe. Beginning their trip in Australia and traveling through Iran on their way from Pakistan to Armenia, the pair, residents of East Sussex, faced accusations of espionage. Despite their family’s strong denial of these charges, Lindsay and Craig remain in custody with ongoing efforts to secure their release and return home.

Lindsay is currently held at Qarchak women’s prison near Tehran, separately from her husband. Their son, Joe Bennett, expressed concerns about his mother’s declining health, noting that she recently required intravenous treatment in her cell at the prison.

Criticism has been directed at the harsh conditions within the notorious women’s prison, described as appalling by human rights organizations. Lindsay shares a cell with 70 other women and sleeps on a bare metal bed without a mattress.

Joe, speaking to The Times, shared his worries about his parents’ well-being, mentioning that Craig is suffering from a tooth abscess at Evin prison, where another high-profile detainee, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, spent nearly six years. Joe highlighted Craig’s stomach issues and dental concerns, emphasizing the distressing nature of their situation.

The family has been advocating for the release of the British couple, with plans to meet with Yvette Cooper on October 16. Although Craig and Lindsay are scheduled to appear in court soon, their family remains uncertain about the proceedings and anticipates a delayed outcome until the following week.

Despite facing different circumstances, the family found hope in the recent release of another British couple detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan. The elderly couple, Barbie (76) and Peter Reynolds (80), who had dedicated years to Afghanistan, were eventually freed after extensive public pressure and support from their family.

Reflecting on these events, Lindsay’s son expressed optimism, seeing the release of the Reynolds couple as a beacon of hope for their own situation.
