NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originating from Hamilton and having a background in junior hockey with the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League.

Mayich, aged 21, was selected by the St. Louis Blues as a defenseman in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. The OHL expressed its solidarity by offering thoughts, prayers, and support to Mayich during this challenging time.

According to his player record, Mayich played minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. The incident leading to his hospitalization reportedly occurred on August 20 while he was preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona.

The St. Louis Blues have expressed their concerns for Mayich’s recovery, with Doug Armstrong, the team’s president of hockey operations, stating that the entire organization is keeping Mayich in their thoughts and prayers as he receives medical care in Arizona. The Blues are providing their utmost support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates.

Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and has not disclosed the student’s identity.

OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed sentiments of support for Mayich and his family, emphasizing that the league stands in solidarity with them during this challenging period. Mayich’s former team, the Hamilton Steel Hockey Club (formerly the Huskies), has previously celebrated his achievements when he signed with the ’67s in 2021 and when he was drafted by the Blues in 2023. Mayich’s long-standing association with the Huskies dates back to when he was nine years old.
