NASA’s effort to rescue the Swift Observatory has been terminated, leading to the telescope’s inevitable re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere later this year. The decision was jointly announced by NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies, following issues with the Link spacecraft’s control systems, preventing it from capturing and raising Swift to a higher orbit.

Swift, renowned for its two-decade-long exploration of cosmic phenomena such as gamma ray bursts and stellar explosions, will now descend through the atmosphere starting in October. Despite NASA’s $30 million investment in Katalyst to extend Swift’s operational lifespan by moving it to a more secure orbit, solar activity accelerated its descent.

The rescue mission encountered setbacks shortly after the Link spacecraft’s launch in July, with the spacecraft entering an uncontrollable spin. Although efforts were made to stabilize Link’s trajectory, ongoing challenges persisted in its orbital navigation. NASA’s Administrator, Jared Isaacman, expressed disappointment at the outcome but emphasized the mission’s significance.

Katalyst plans to continue utilizing the Link spacecraft to showcase potential rescue capabilities for future operations. The company’s CEO, Ghonhee Lee, described the mission as ambitious, completed within a tight timeframe of less than a year, highlighting the valuable lessons learned throughout the process.

Originally launched in 2004, Swift had its scientific instruments deactivated earlier this year to mitigate its descent rate, maintaining an altitude of 345 kilometers as of the latest update. Katalyst’s initial goal of returning Swift to its original orbit of 600 kilometers to prolong its cosmic study period remains unfulfilled.

Furthermore, the potential rescue of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, currently experiencing orbital decay due to heightened solar activity, was contingent on the success of the Swift mission. The status of Hubble’s rescue remains uncertain following the Swift Observatory’s fate.
