A tragic incident unfolded as a baby girl was found lifeless on a sofa at home, neglected by her mother who failed to seek help in time. Natasha Birks, aged 37, was solely responsible for five-month-old Rhian Mahoney when she placed her on a couch and indulged in a night of partying with a friend, neglecting proper care for her daughter.
Prosecutors revealed that Birks neglected to monitor the baby’s well-being, as she failed to notice Rhian had not woken up for her regular feeding during the night. Tragically, by the time emergency services were contacted, it was too late to save the infant. Birks has now been found guilty of child cruelty in connection to the incident that occurred in the Normacot area of Stoke on Trent in 2021, with sentencing scheduled for December.
During the evening in question, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard that Birks and her companion consumed significant amounts of alcoholic beverages while Rhian slept in another room. Birks, who did not eat anything to counteract the effects of the alcohol, left the house multiple times to smoke, neglecting her daughter’s care.
The prosecution argued that throughout the night, Birks only briefly checked on her daughter from a distance, failing to conduct adequate assessments. When Rhian did not wake for her usual feeding window and showed signs of health deterioration, Birks failed to recognize these alarming changes.
Elaine Radway from the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that despite not causing her child’s death intentionally, Birks’ high level of intoxication hindered her ability to care for Rhian properly. The legal system holds parents responsible for safeguarding their children, and this case underscores the severe repercussions when caregivers neglect their duty to protect vulnerable minors. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to all those impacted by this tragedy.
