Fire TV Stick users are advised to exercise caution when installing new apps on their devices due to recent developments. The popular tool “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, creating an opportunity for a fraudulent copycat app aimed at defrauding users.
The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s marketplace over the weekend has raised concerns among users. Downloader, which has been in use for almost ten years, allowed Fire TV owners to search for and install apps not available through official channels, making it a valuable resource for accessing a variety of software.
Despite its widespread popularity, Downloader has been temporarily suspended, as confirmed by its developer, Elias Saba. Amazon flagged Downloader as a full web browser due to a recent update, violating its policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices. Saba, also the operator of the Fire TV site AFTVnews, has addressed this issue by removing the browser identification in the app’s latest update, awaiting Amazon’s approval for reinstatement.
Meanwhile, a fake version of Downloader has emerged, attempting to deceive Fire TV users into paying a weekly fee. Saba has warned against installing this fraudulent app and advises users to report it to Amazon. Users with the legitimate Downloader installed are instructed not to uninstall it, as reinstallation will only be possible once Amazon restores it. Additionally, users are advised to disable Auto Offload to prevent the app from being removed automatically.
Pending Amazon’s approval, the fixed version of Downloader may become available on Fire TV devices later in the week, requiring users to stay vigilant for updates on the situation.
