A mother from Georgia has admitted to committing murder in connection with her eight-year-old daughter’s death in 2021, according to authorities. Brittany Hall, 31, received a life sentence for felony murder, 11 counts of child cruelty, concealing a death, and making false statements. The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office made the announcement.
Hall and her partner, Celeste Owens, who was previously convicted of 20 charges and sentenced to life in prison plus 235 years, were found responsible for subjecting Hall’s three children to abuse, resulting in the death of one child. The deceased child’s emaciated body was later found in a nearby wooded area.
The district attorney’s office confirmed that Hall and Owens reported the eight-year-old, Amari Hall, missing on November 19, 2021, while they were staying in a hotel with the children. They claimed that Amari had disappeared from the room while they were asleep.
Authorities grew suspicious of their story after finding evidence of child mistreatment. Surveillance footage from the hotel room showed the couple attacking all three children. Additionally, disturbing internet searches were found on Owens’ phone, including inquiries about child behavior, local lakes, sewer systems, and reporting missing persons.
Further investigation revealed that Owens rented a U-Haul truck and drove it to DeKalb County, where Amari’s body was later discovered. Medical examiners testified that Amari had been repeatedly hit on the head, resulting in fatal injuries. The girl weighed only 54 pounds at the time of her death and showed signs of severe abuse, including a lacerated liver.
During the trial, details emerged about the condition in which Amari’s body was found, with crime scene investigator Kia Jimenez describing the body being wrapped in plastic bags with visible injuries. Owens was ultimately found guilty on multiple charges, including murder and child cruelty.
Authorities expressed deep concern over the case, with the deputy chief assistant district attorney describing it as the most harrowing child-related incident they had encountered. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson emphasized that the tragic outcome resulted from the mother’s failure to protect her children and participation in the abuse. She expressed hope for healing and closure for the surviving siblings and extended family members affected by the abuse.
