A seasoned pilot tragically met his death in a fiery crash shortly after eight skydivers jumped out of his aircraft. Paul Smith, an experienced aviator, crashed his light plane into dense bushland near Moruya Airport in New South Wales. The 54-year-old pilot, who was also a skydiving instructor, was alone in the aircraft at the time of the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene. The skydivers had safely landed within the airport grounds just two minutes before the crash occurred.
Detective Inspector Justin Marks expressed his condolences, describing Smith as a highly respected and well-liked member of the local community. The inspector mentioned that a report was being prepared for the coroner to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Angus Mitchell from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau mentioned that the skydivers had not yet been interviewed, but witnesses had reported hearing unusual sounds and observing erratic flight patterns before the plane went down. The Bureau of Meteorology was contacted for weather information during the time of the incident.
Chief Commissioner Mitchell disclosed that the aircraft had undergone a significant maintenance check before being brought into the country six weeks prior. The plane, which dated back to around 1980, had been flown multiple times before the crash. A preliminary report on the incident may take up to eight weeks to determine the cause.
Paul Smith, with over 20 years of flying experience, had supervised more than 20,000 jumps and was honored by the Australian Parachute Federation for his contributions to the sport. This incident follows the recent death of Mexican TV broadcaster Debora Estrella and pilot Bryan Ballesteros in a plane crash in Nuevo Leon. Unverified footage circulating on social media depicted the plane spiraling out of control before crashing, with attempts made by a helicopter pilot to assist.
Prior to the accident, Debora had shared a photo of the plane on her Instagram Live stories, moments before take-off from Monterrey-Del Norte International Airport.
