Nevertheless, individuals with an annual income exceeding £35,000 will be required to reimburse the Winter Fuel Payment. Although the funds are initially disbursed, HMRC will reclaim the payment through the taxation system.

Typically, the Winter Fuel Payment will be recouped automatically via PAYE by modifying your tax code. If you are utilizing self-assessment, you must include it in your tax return.

The income threshold of £35,000 pertains to individual earnings, meaning one person in a household may retain their portion of the Winter Fuel Payment while another individual may need to repay theirs.

While the option to decline the Winter Fuel Payment was available until September 15, 2025, recipients can anticipate the payments in November or December from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Eligible households receive £200, while households with a member aged over 80 receive £300. Eligibility is determined by age at the conclusion of the qualifying week.

The qualifying week for this year is set from September 15 to 21, 2025. If you are already receiving specific benefits, the Winter Fuel Payment will be issued automatically. Otherwise, you must apply if certain criteria are met.

Certain circumstances, such as being hospitalized for the entire qualifying week, residing in a care home from a specified date, or being imprisoned during the qualifying week, could render individuals ineligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. In Scotland, the Winter Fuel Payment has been substituted with the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.
