Manchester Arena bombing accomplice Hashem Abedi made a court appearance with heavy security, escorted by five guards in full protective gear and wielding riot shields.
Abedi, now 28 years old, was found guilty of aiding his brother, suicide bomber Salman Abedi, in the tragic Manchester terror attack that claimed the lives of 22 individuals. He stood trial at Woolwich Crown Court for allegedly trying to murder prison officers at a high-security facility.
Appearing via video link from HMP Belmarsh, Abedi is charged with three counts of attempted murder for an incident at HMP Frankland in County Durham on April 12, where four prison officers were injured in a suspected attack.
Additionally, Abedi faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and possession of a knife or weapon without authorization. He did not enter pleas during the hearing and is scheduled for the next court appearance at the Old Bailey on Friday, October 17.
Following an alleged assault involving hot oil and makeshift weapons, three prison officers were hospitalized with severe injuries. The Prison Officers Association described the attack as unprovoked and vicious, leading to life-threatening injuries such as burns, scalds, and stab wounds.
Abedi is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 55 years, imposed in August 2020 for his role in the terror plot.
