A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Leanne Williams, 47, whose body was found in a disorderly flat in Swansea. The victim had suffered severe injuries, including a fractured skull, in a terrifying and brutal attack.
Matthew Battenbough, 34, pleaded guilty to the murder and was given a minimum sentence of 20 years and 114 days at Swansea Crown Court. The court heard that Leanne lived alone, struggled with substance abuse issues, and was vulnerable to exploitation due to her circumstances.
Battenbough and Leanne were acquainted from the city center, and on the day of the incident, they were captured on CCTV together. After spending time together, Battenbough was seen leaving and returning to Leanne’s flat multiple times. Eventually, her body was found concealed under blankets and towels in the chaotic living room.
The post-mortem examination revealed extensive injuries to Leanne’s head, face, and neck, with evidence of sexual assault. Despite the forensic findings, the nature of the sexual encounter remains unclear. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head.
Battenbough, with a history of criminal offenses, was remorseless during his trial, showing indifference to the severity of his actions. The judge emphasized the lack of remorse and sentenced him to life in prison with a specified minimum term.
The defendant’s DNA was found on items near the victim’s body, further implicating him in the crime. Battenbough’s decision to plead guilty spared the victim’s family from enduring a trial, although his lack of remorse was evident throughout the court proceedings.
