Lorenzo Musetti has gone through a tense period but has successfully clinched his desired spot at the ATP Finals. The 23-year-old was on track to qualify for the prestigious event for the first time, but after an early exit at the Paris Masters, he was surpassed by Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Race to Turin.

Musetti headed to the ATP 250 competition in Athens fully aware that his fate was in his own hands. Winning the tournament would secure his place at the ATP Finals, while anything less would see Auger-Aliassime claim the final spot.

Despite falling to Novak Djokovic in the final, Musetti’s qualification was ensured as Djokovic later withdrew from the year-end Finals. Following his narrow defeat in the Athens final, Musetti quickly traveled to Turin for the ATP Finals, where he is set to face Taylor Fritz on Monday.

Expressing his excitement on social media, the Italian said, “A dream that comes true.” He also shared a picture of himself and his team en route to Italy.

Musetti was aiming for his third career title and first since 2022 at the Hellenic Championship but faced disappointment in the final. However, he was all smiles when he embraced Djokovic after their match, having received positive news regarding his ATP Finals qualification.

Acknowledging Djokovic’s last-minute withdrawal, Musetti respected the decision and found humor in the situation. With Djokovic out, the ATP scrambled to secure a replacement alternate, ultimately turning to Casper Ruud after Alexander Bublik moved up to first alternate position.

Ruud, who was enjoying a break, swiftly made his way to Turin as the second alternate. Both Bublik and Ruud, as alternates, stand to receive £118k without playing, with potential for increased fees if they are called upon to compete.
