This crackdown follows the arrest of nearly 500 individuals during a pro-Palestine march in London over the weekend. Protesters defied the Prime Minister’s criticism that holding demonstrations on the anniversary of the October 7 attacks was not in line with British values.

During his trip to Mumbai, Starmer expressed the need to evaluate the impact of ongoing protests, calling on the Home Secretary to explore potential adjustments to existing powers. He emphasized the necessity of addressing the nature of certain chants heard at these gatherings.

When pressed for details, Starmer highlighted the operational autonomy of law enforcement agencies in handling such matters. However, he stressed the importance of engaging with police forces to review current policing strategies and consider any necessary adjustments to powers in place.

The ongoing review process involves consultation with leaders of the Jewish community to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand.
