A Food Basics store will replace a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys neighborhood this autumn, leading to job losses for many employees. Metro Inc. stated that the decision to convert the store to a Food Basics was made to better align with customer demands in the area. The closure of the Southgate Metro location, which employed 72 staff members, came as a surprise to employees, including Justin Braganza, a meat cutter with over 30 years of service.

The employees were informed of the closure in May due to financial pressures, including increased rent and concerns about the store’s profitability. While Metro cited local market conditions and customer needs for the change, some employees expressed disappointment and uncertainty about their future job prospects. The collective agreement between Metro and the workers’ union stipulates job opportunities for a minimum number of former Southgate Metro employees at the new Food Basics store.

Although the union negotiated enhanced options for the affected workers, there are concerns about the impact on employees like Braganza, who may not have a job waiting for them at the new store due to differing job roles between the two banners. A legal expert highlighted potential challenges that the union may face in addressing the situation, including the interpretation of the employment agreement and potential avenues for dispute resolution.
