GOP Members Back Trump in Trade Dispute with Canada

Republican lawmakers in Congress are showing their support for U.S. President Donald Trump in the ongoing trade dispute with Canada, placing blame on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration for exiting negotiations. A group of GOP House members convened on Capitol Hill for a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss tariffs. While some Republicans privately worry about the potential negative impact of escalating tariffs on their re-election chances in the upcoming midterms, those who spoke with CBC News after the meeting expressed solidarity with the president’s trade tactics.

Texas Representative August Pfluger commended Trump for bringing back manufacturing jobs to the U.S. and attributed the trade conflict to Canada’s actions. Pfluger stated, “It’s a conflict instigated by Canada. The Canadians need to be reasonable. They have been taking advantage of the United States for a long time.” Additionally, Florida Congressman Brian Mast criticized Canada for the breakdown in trade discussions, emphasizing that Canada rejected a favorable deal offered to them.

When Greer concluded the meeting, he chose not to address inquiries from journalists regarding the status of negotiations with Canada. Meanwhile, at the White House, Trump reiterated his stance that Canada has unfairly exploited the U.S. in trade dealings. He specifically highlighted restrictions on American banks operating in Canada as a major concern. Trump emphasized that Canadian banks operate in the U.S., generating substantial revenue, while American banks face restrictions in Canada.

On Capitol Hill, the only Republican expressing concerns about the trade war’s impact on voters was Representative Ralph Norman from South Carolina. Norman emphasized the importance of affordability in his state and mentioned the need to address how tariffs are affecting various states. He acknowledged that Greer was open to discussing the effects of tariffs on individual states, indicating that the concerns raised were taken seriously.

Despite public opinion polls showing disapproval of Trump’s tariffs, several Congressional Republicans stood behind the president’s trade actions with Canada, echoing his arguments. Missouri Congressman Eric Burlison warned against Canada imposing retaliatory tariffs on U.S. exports, stating that Canada relies more on the U.S. economically. Burlison emphasized the significance of the economic relationship between the two countries, suggesting that Canada needs the U.S. more than vice versa.
