More than 2,500 individuals have lost their lives in the Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is rapidly spreading across an area larger than France, reported Julien Harneis, the senior United Nations coordinator for Ebola, on Friday. Harneis, speaking from Bunia in northeastern Congo via video call, emphasized the urgent need for additional assistance as the current funding reserve is expected to be depleted within weeks.

In a significant development, a batch of vaccines designed for a previous strain of Ebola has been dispatched to the D.R.C. The country had requested these vaccines from the global stockpile of Ebola virus disease vaccines. The vaccine, known as Ervebo, is authorized for preventing the Zaire Ebola virus strain. Out of the 70,000 doses allocated, 20,000 will be utilized in a late-stage trial to evaluate its effectiveness against the current Bundibugyo virus strain.

The escalating death toll coincides with the expansion of the 17th Ebola outbreak in the D.R.C., marking the largest outbreak in the nation’s history in terms of case numbers, surpassing the previous 2018-2020 epidemic. Unlike other strains, the Bundibugyo Ebola strain currently causing the outbreak lacks approved vaccines or treatments.

Harneis highlighted the alarming pace at which the outbreak is spreading, surpassing the localized response efforts. The region, plagued by three decades of conflict, is facing immense humanitarian challenges amidst the growing epidemic.

Healthcare workers have been significantly affected, with 160 workers falling ill and 43 losing their lives to Ebola. Harneis expressed concern over the rising violence directed towards health workers and facilities, attributing it to fear and misinformation circulating among the local population.

In addition, aid organizations have faced challenges due to reduced funding and logistical hurdles, including disrupted banking services hindering the payment of personnel involved in the outbreak response. Misinformation and conspiracy theories have also fueled tensions, leading to attacks on health workers and resistance to public health measures.

The situation remains critical as efforts to contain the outbreak are met with various obstacles, jeopardizing the lives of both healthcare workers and the local community.
