Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed that one of the 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents who were reported missing following the devastating floods in Nepal’s border region with China has been located unharmed. The individual had been unreachable due to communication disruptions but managed to establish contact on Tuesday.
The flash flooding occurred a week ago when a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan border area between Nepal and China. The natural disaster resulted in significant damage to the region, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Over 1,100 individuals have lost their lives, and more than 3,900 people are still unaccounted for as a result of the catastrophic event. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry has reported that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are also missing.
In response to the crisis, Canada will be dispatching over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to assist in the affected area. In addition to the $5 million in humanitarian aid already committed by Ottawa, this support aims to aid in the relief efforts and help those impacted by the tragedy.
