The Calgary Flames community mourns the loss of Peter Maher, the iconic voice behind the team’s radio broadcasts for over three decades. Maher, who passed away at the age of 79, began his journey as the Flames’ play-by-play commentator in 1980 and continued until his retirement after the 2013-14 NHL season.

Known for his infectious passion and memorable catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”, Maher’s contributions to the Flames’ legacy, including the 1989 Stanley Cup victory and the 2004 finals appearance, endeared him to fans across Calgary.

In a statement, the Flames expressed their condolences, recognizing Maher’s lasting impact beyond the broadcast booth. Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher’s broadcasting career also included calling Toronto Maple Leafs games before moving to Calgary to become the official voice of the Flames.

Rob Kerr, Maher’s longtime colleague, praised his dedication to storytelling and journalistic integrity, highlighting Maher’s pivotal role in connecting Flames fans through radio broadcasts. Maher’s illustrious career extended to calling NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the iconic “Golden Goal” at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, Maher’s legacy lives on through the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome, named in his honor, and an annual award recognizing Flames players who embody his values of sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
