A woman confronted a group of men outside a pub in a dramatic incident where she brandished a knife pulled from her bra. The altercation took place on Regent Street in Hinckley, with CCTV footage capturing the moment Carlene Francis charged towards the men, waving the blade in their direction. She had to be restrained by a friend as she continued to gesture aggressively.

Francis, 43, who was identified by Leicestershire Police from the CCTV footage, was arrested on the same day and appeared in court via video link from prison, where she was already serving a sentence for previous offenses. She had admitted to carrying a blade in public, facing potential imprisonment due to a prior conviction for possessing an offensive weapon.

Her defense lawyer, Gary Short, highlighted Francis’ troubled past, citing a history of abuse and violence that led her to react aggressively when feeling threatened. He mentioned her experiences of sexual abuse, homelessness, drug addiction, and mental health issues, which shaped her confrontational response to perceived danger.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the men targeted by Francis seemed unfazed, with some even returning to their drinks shortly after the confrontation. Recorder Anna Trussler acknowledged Francis’ vulnerability and challenging life circumstances, expressing hope for her rehabilitation and progress.

Ultimately, Francis was sentenced to 35 weeks in prison, with the term commencing after the completion of her current nine-month sentence. The court emphasized the need for support and rehabilitation for Francis to address the underlying issues contributing to her behavior.
