“Virgin Media Advises: Keep Routers Cool for Optimal Speed”

Published on

Virgin Media has shared some valuable tips to ensure optimal internet speeds throughout the year. While common advice like keeping the router centrally located, restarting it monthly, and avoiding signal disruptions such as fish tanks can enhance performance, there’s a lesser-known factor that can impact speed – weather changes.

As temperatures climb in late spring and summer, routers may face increased strain, making it crucial to place them in cool, well-ventilated areas.

Virgin Media explained in a recent blog post how warmer weather can affect broadband performance: “High temperatures during hot weather can stress broadband equipment both inside and outside your home.

“While outdoor equipment is designed for high temperatures, indoor routers can struggle if they become too warm.

“Routers need adequate airflow for optimal functioning. Placing your Hub behind the TV, in a cramped cupboard, near a radiator, or under direct sunlight can lead to heat buildup, particularly during a heatwave. This can result in slower speeds, dropped connections, or the router rebooting to cool down.”

Therefore, during warm weather, ensure your router is in a cooler location. While hot weather can affect performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt your streaming activities.

Virgin Media emphasized: “Most broadband issues perceived as weather-related actually originate indoors.

“Factors like thick walls, excessive connected devices, and poor Hub placement often have a more significant daily impact on your connection than external weather conditions.”

For optimal Wi-Fi performance, position your Hub in a central, open area away from direct sunlight.

Virgin also recommended avoiding large metal objects and keeping the router unobstructed by furniture.

After severe weather, it’s advisable to check your cables. “Following storms or strong winds, ensure cables are secure and undamaged,” the company advised.

Lastly, reduce interference by limiting the number of simultaneously connected devices for improved connectivity.
