“Beware: Dangers Lurk in Unofficial Phone Chargers”

Published on

An urgent warning has been issued for owners of Android and iPhone devices regarding the dangers of using unofficial chargers. With many new devices now only coming with a USB-C cable and no charger included, consumers are often tempted to seek cheaper alternatives. However, consumer watchdog Which? has highlighted the serious safety risks associated with purchasing unofficial chargers, which are commonly available on online platforms like Amazon for significantly lower prices compared to official products from brands like Apple or Samsung.

Which? conducted tests on various chargers bought from online marketplaces such as Amazon, AliExpress, B&Q Marketplace, Debenhams Marketplace, and eBay, revealing alarming findings. Nine chargers were found to pose risks of electric shock due to substandard manufacturing, while eight were identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.

Among the concerning discoveries was a counterfeit charger resembling an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter, complete with Apple branding on the packaging. The investigation also revealed chargers lacking required UK safety markings and devices with hazardous internal circuitry that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions.

Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences poorly designed electrical products can have and urged the government to enhance product safety regulations and enforce stricter obligations on online marketplaces to ensure consumer safety.

In response to the findings, Amazon emphasized its commitment to customer safety and collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. The company assured that all products on its platform comply with regulations and that the flagged chargers have been removed. B&Q also echoed a dedication to product safety and confirmed proactive measures to prevent the sale of recalled items on its Marketplace.

Consumers are advised to purchase chargers only from official retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. While these options may come at a higher cost upfront, experts caution that the potential dangers of using unofficial chargers far outweigh any cost savings.
