Ambulance Service Staff Arrested in Wiltshire Inquiry

Published on

Two individuals working for an ambulance service have been taken into custody in connection with an inquiry into six fatalities in Wiltshire, according to the police.

Wiltshire Police disclosed that a man in his 30s from the western part of the county was apprehended on suspicion of six instances of gross negligence manslaughter and four counts of ill-treatment or neglect by a care provider. Additionally, a 59-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. Both suspects have been granted bail.

The investigation was initiated in 2023. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, from the Major Crime Investigation Team at Wiltshire Police, confirmed the launch of a significant inquiry into several adult deaths in and around Wiltshire. The probe began following an initial report to Wiltshire Police in 2023, with detailed investigations conducted to establish the facts.

“In June 2024, a man in his 30s from West Wiltshire was arrested on suspicion of six counts of gross negligence manslaughter and four counts of ill-treatment or neglect by a care provider. Furthermore, in March this year, a 59-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. Both suspects have been released on conditional bail while our investigations continue,” stated Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker.

The main priority is to provide support to the families and friends of the deceased individuals, and the media has been urged to respect their privacy during this sensitive time. Both suspects were employed by the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

A representative from the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust stated, “Upon becoming aware of any concerns, the trust promptly initiated an internal investigation leading to a timely referral to the police. We have been collaborating closely with them throughout the ongoing investigation.”

“Two staff members were suspended, relieving them of all duties, including patient care. This is an isolated incident with no ongoing risk to patients. In case of a life-threatening emergency, please continue to dial 999,” the spokesperson added.

“One of the suspended individuals is no longer employed by the trust. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further comments can be provided at this stage.”
