“Alberta’s Black Bear Hunting with Dogs Sparks Conservation Controversy”

Published on

The Alberta government’s decision to allow hunters to use dogs for black bear hunting is aimed at supporting caribou conservation efforts, as stated in the annual Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations. While this move has sparked controversy, with public calls for the hunt’s rescindment, the government asserts that reducing black bear populations could help alleviate predation on caribou calves and enhance calf survival.

However, wildlife biologists, including former provincial caribou manager Dave Hervieux, challenge the efficacy of hunting black bears with dogs in aiding caribou conservation. Hervieux emphasizes that there is no scientific basis for this practice and questions its impact on caribou populations. He points out that many areas where hunting with dogs is permitted lack significant caribou presence historically.

In contrast, the government’s wolf cull program, aimed at protecting caribou, has shown some success in stabilizing caribou populations. Mark Boyce, an ecology professor at the University of Alberta, echoes Hervieux’s concerns, stating that hunting black bears with dogs does not align with sound ecological principles.

The government, however, defends its decision, emphasizing that the use of dogs for black bear hunting provides sustainable hunting opportunities for Albertans. They claim that reducing black bear numbers in certain areas could benefit caribou conservation efforts. The province highlights the need for additional tools to manage predation on caribou and supports the use of dogs for black bear hunting as a complementary measure.

The controversy surrounding the use of dogs for black bear hunting underscores the ongoing debate between conservationists and hunting advocates in Alberta. While the government sees this practice as a means to support caribou recovery, wildlife experts remain skeptical about its actual conservation benefits.
