In northeastern Alberta, researchers are tackling copper deficiencies in cattle by applying the mineral to wheat crops to improve their fertility and health. Simultaneously, they are experimenting with various cover crops to find ones that effectively suppress weeds, thus reducing the need for herbicides.
Jay Cory, a farmer and chair of the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA), highlighted the inspiration gained from research, emphasizing how it sparks new ideas for farmers. LARA, a non-profit organization serving northeastern Alberta, conducts its studies at the Fort Kent research field located around 250 kilometers northeast of Edmonton, between Bonnyville and Cold Lake.
Producers from the area recently visited the facility to explore the ongoing trials, which focus on enhancing productivity and sustainability through research on different crop varieties and practices.
Maria Angelica Ouellette, a research scientist with LARA, emphasized the organization’s commitment to testing ideas in real-world conditions, including variations in precipitation and temperature. She noted that input from local farmers shapes the research initiatives, aiming to help them achieve sustainable and productive crops.
This year’s trials face the challenge of excessively wet weather, affecting crop performance and providing valuable insights into unexpected growing conditions.
