“Saskatchewan Hunters Halt Activities Amid Chronic Wasting Disease Concerns”

Published on

Ken Erickson, a long-time hunter in Saskatchewan since 1971, made the decision to halt his hunting activities due to concerns over chronic wasting disease. Following the conclusion of a provincial program, many other hunters are contemplating a similar pause.

The Saskatchewan government opted to discontinue its chronic wasting disease testing program after facing low participation from hunters. This disease impacts the nervous systems of cervids such as deer, elk, and moose.

Erickson, who resides in Regina and began hunting at a young age, emphasized the importance of his family’s safety, particularly his immunocompromised wife, as a driving factor behind his decision to cease hunting certain animals.

Expressing his reluctance to risk contamination, Erickson stated, “I just don’t want to bring that into the house. I’m just not taking chances like that.”

Despite his affinity for hunting, especially birds, Erickson acknowledged the challenges of handling larger game as he aged. He expressed interest in hunting deer again if not for the risk of chronic wasting disease.

Criticism has arisen concerning the government’s move to end the testing program, with Darrell Crabbe, the executive director of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, highlighting its significance in ensuring the safety of meat consumed by hunters.

Moving forward, the province plans to monitor wildlife health and populations through alternative methods. However, concerns persist regarding the potential consequences of suspending the program, including the increased risk of disease spread and the impact on hunters’ decisions to continue their hunting activities.

The termination of the chronic wasting disease testing program has sparked calls for the government to reconsider its decision and take proactive measures to address the issue effectively. Researchers and hunting advocates urge the government to reinstate the program and enhance coordination efforts for the future.
