“Canadian Businesses Navigate Impact of New U.S. Tariffs”

Published on

Canadian businesses are commencing operations on Tuesday, marking the initiation of the federal government’s dollar-for-dollar tariffs on $28 billion worth of U.S. imports. While many owners are preparing for increased costs and potential supply-chain disruptions, experts suggest that consumers may not experience significant impacts.

The newly imposed tariffs became effective at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, targeting nearly 700 American products with tariff rates ranging from 15 percent to 50 percent. The affected items span from essential commodities like steel and aluminum to household necessities such as toilet paper, as well as specialized products like coin-operated arcade games.

These dollar-for-dollar tariffs are Canada’s retaliatory measure in response to the 50-percent tariffs imposed by the U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration on numerous products exceeding $28 billion on August 22. Reacting to the escalating trade war, Dan Kelly, the president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), representing over 100,000 small and medium-sized firms nationwide, expressed concerns. Kelly noted that many members feel marginalized and vulnerable in the ongoing trade dispute with the U.S.

JS Furniture, a Manitoba-based retailer of home furnishings and appliances, is among the businesses impacted by the tariffs. Brian Kyca, the general manager, estimates that about 60 percent of the company’s sales volume comes from American goods. Kyca highlighted that bedroom furniture sets, particularly laminate-style suites, are anticipated to face significant price hikes due to the tariffs.

Navigating the repercussions has been challenging for JS Furniture, with limited information available from agencies like the Canada Border Services Agency. Despite the uncertainties, the company intends to absorb the elevated costs while exploring options with U.S. manufacturers to mitigate the impact on customers awaiting deliveries.

Colin Mang, an economics professor at McMaster University, noted that businesses across Canada are facing a delicate balancing act in response to the tariffs. Mang emphasized that the extent to which retailers pass on tariff costs to consumers depends on the anticipated duration of the tariffs and their impact on profitability.

Recent statements from Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem emphasized that the tariffs, both from Canada and the U.S., will introduce additional costs for certain businesses but are applied to a limited range of products. The ongoing trade tensions have prompted concerns among business leaders like Kelly and Kyca, with JS Furniture reconsidering expansion plans and employees feeling the effects, particularly in reduced consumer spending.

Mang highlighted that the new Canadian tariffs primarily target U.S. goods for which domestic alternatives are readily available, aiming to bolster Canadian companies’ position in the domestic market. He reassured consumers that the impact of these counter-tariffs on their day-to-day lives is expected to be minimal, emphasizing that most households are unlikely to notice significant changes as a result of the trade measures.
