“World Sends Love to 104-Year-Old Gus Before Surgery”

Published on

A treasured 104-year-old gopher tortoise named Gus is being showered with affection and good wishes from well-wishers worldwide before his upcoming surgery. Jeff Gray, the curator of the Museum of Natural History in Halifax, where Gus resides, revealed that numerous letters, cards, and artworks have flooded in for the tortoise since the announcement of his surgery to remove a bladder stone. The museum’s social media platforms have also been inundated with thousands of messages from supporters in Canada and beyond, expressing their hopes for Gus’s successful operation.

Gray expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support, highlighting the emotional connection people feel with Gus, many of whom recall visiting him as children and now return with their families. Believed to be the oldest gopher tortoise globally, Gus has been a fixture at the Museum of Natural History since 1942, when he was purchased for $5 in Florida. Regularly engaging with visitors, Gus takes leisurely walks around the museum grounds, basking under a heat lamp in his cozy enclosure.

As Gus prepares for surgery, visitors like Becky Cooper and her son Spike, visiting from Maine, marveled at his charm and resilience. Gus’s surgery, necessitated by a growing bladder stone, presents a unique challenge due to his age, but veterinary advancements offer a less invasive procedure for his well-being. With a strong support network and a dedicated veterinary team, Gus’s caretakers are optimistic for his post-surgery recovery and continued well-being.

While gopher tortoises typically live around 60 years in the wild, Gus’s longevity under human care underscores the positive impact of responsible conservation efforts. Gray emphasized the importance of providing secure environments and regular veterinary care to extend the lifespan of these endangered creatures. As Gus prepares for his surgery, the community’s unwavering support and hope for his successful recovery serve as a testament to the special bond shared with this remarkable centenarian tortoise.
