“Yukon Child Protection System Undergoes Positive Changes”

Published on

A child welfare advocate in Yukon has noted positive developments within the territory’s child protection system in response to recent critical assessments. The Yukon Legislative Assembly’s standing committee on public accounts expressed skepticism that the Health and Social Services department adequately addressed concerns raised by the auditor general. Recommendations focused on critical incidents, data tracking, and outcomes were highlighted in the committee’s report, which also included 20 additional suggestions for the department to consider.

Annette King, the territory’s child and youth advocate, highlighted parallels between the auditor’s findings and her observations. She acknowledged ongoing concerns but expressed optimism about observed changes. Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers opted not to comment immediately to allow for a thorough review of the recommendations received.

Following a public hearing, the legislative committee emphasized the need for mandatory training for staff working with vulnerable clients and urged the department to address social worker vacancies. Concerns were raised about the lack of safe spaces in rural and First Nations communities. Kate White, committee chair and health and social services critic for the NDP, emphasized the importance of updating training plans and the case management system to enhance support for workers and families.

White stressed the need for the department to act promptly on the committee’s recommendations. King highlighted persistent issues such as the shortage of social workers and overrepresentation of Indigenous children in care. She called for continued momentum in advocating for children and youth, considering the historical impact of residential schools and colonization on child welfare practices.
