“Alberta Researchers Seek Input on Transgender Healthcare in P.E.I.”

Published on

Researchers from Alberta are seeking input from individuals in Prince Edward Island regarding the challenges faced by transgender adults seeking gender-affirming healthcare. Sandra Thoms and Nicholas Wallace, both students in the field of social work at the University of Calgary, have initiated a study focusing on Atlantic Canada. This study aims to gather insights from both the transgender community and healthcare providers.

Wallace highlighted the scarcity of research on transgender individuals accessing healthcare services, particularly in Atlantic Canada. According to the World Health Organization, gender-affirming care encompasses various interventions, including social, psychological, behavioral, and medical support that validate an individual’s gender identity.

AinZ Kendrick, the executive director of the P.E.I. Transgender Network, emphasized that gender-affirming care extends beyond medical transitions, encompassing a holistic approach to support individuals. This care includes simple gestures like using the correct name and pronouns during appointments, indicating respect and understanding.

Thoms and Wallace noted a low participation rate from Prince Edward Island in their study compared to other Atlantic provinces. Kendrick attributed this to lingering stigma and fear within the transgender community. They encouraged the researchers to foster relationships with existing community organizations to increase participation and trust.

Despite P.E.I.’s progressive gender-affirming care policies, Kendrick pointed out existing barriers, such as the need for certain surgeries still requiring travel outside the province. The researchers aim to shed light on both challenges and positive experiences within the healthcare system for transgender individuals. Thoms and Wallace plan to share their findings with the communities involved, hoping to drive positive changes based on the shared experiences and insights gathered during the study.
