Miyu Yamashita extended her lead at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton with an impressive 5-under-par 65 in the third round, bringing her total score to 19 under at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. The Japanese player held a commanding six-stroke lead heading into the final day of the $2.75 million US event, aiming for her fourth career LPGA victory and second of the season.
Yamashita, 25, recovered from a bogey on the 17th hole by sinking a birdie on the 18th to maintain her strong performance. She expressed her fondness for the course, especially praising her putting skills.
Setting a new tournament record, Yamashita’s 54-hole score of 191 and six-shot lead tied the previous record for the largest lead after 54 holes. Gina Kim of the U.S. and Japan’s Yuri Yoshida trailed behind at 13 under after posting rounds of 6-under 64 and 66, respectively.
Canadian teenager Aphrodite Deng from Calgary made a significant jump on the leaderboard by carding the lowest round of the day with a remarkable 63, bringing her total to 10 under and tying for sixth place. Deng, who was the top amateur in last year’s tournament, focused on minimizing mistakes and learning from her previous rounds.
Notably, four Canadian women aged 18 and under, including Anna Huang, Michelle Xing, and Clairey Lin, made the cut for the first time in the CPKC Women’s Open. Defending champion Brooke Henderson also showcased a strong performance, ending the day at 7 under despite a few missed putts.
As the tournament progresses, Yamashita maintains a substantial lead, with Henderson trailing by 12 strokes and aiming for a strong finish. The final day’s weather forecast predicts a temperature of 26°C with some forest fire smoke before potential thunderstorms later in the afternoon.
