The Gwich’in Tribal Council has decided to delay its upcoming annual general assembly, citing the need for additional time to finalize financial documents. Originally set to commence next week in Fort McPherson, the council announced the postponement in a news release on Thursday, with new dates and participation details to be announced soon.
According to the release, the decision to reschedule the assembly was made thoughtfully, taking into account the significant business matters typically addressed during the event. This postponement follows past instances of financial-related challenges within council meetings. In a previous meeting, the council faced issues with the release of audited financial statements, a standard requirement for annual general assemblies. The delays were attributed to difficulties in obtaining financial data from the Gwich’in Development Corporation (GDC), a company fully owned by the tribal council, with references made to obstacles within the GDC that impeded the completion of its audited statements.
