“Dawn the Plump Marmot Wins Inaugural Fat Marmot Week”

Published on

During the first-ever Fat Marmot Week organized by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado, a plump marmot named Dawn emerged as the favorite among the yellow-bellied marmot community. The competition featured a popular vote and a weigh-in to determine the marmot that gained the most weight before hibernation.

Dawn, renowned for fathering multiple marmot litters and indulging in licking salt and minerals from rocks, impressively doubled his body weight from 2.5 to 5.9 kilograms during the summer. Katie Adler, the organizer of Fat Marmot Week, expressed admiration for Dawn’s rock-eating habits, declaring him a deserving winner.

However, as the reigning champion, Dawn also shoulders the responsibility of being the unofficial ambassador for the Marmot Project, a crucial long-term research initiative facing financial uncertainty due to cuts in science and education funding in the United States.

The Marmot Project draws inspiration from the popular Fat Bear Week in Alaska and aims to study and understand the behavior of yellow-bellied marmots during hibernation. These marmots, like bears, accumulate substantial weight before winter to survive the cold months.

Katie Adler, a UCLA graduate student involved in ecological research, emphasized the significance of the Marmot Project, which has been running since 1962 and has tracked over 5,000 marmots across 12 generations. The project’s leaders, including University of Ottawa biologist Julien Martin, underscored the importance of studying how wildlife adapts to environmental changes and human disturbances.

However, the Marmot Project faces challenges due to funding cuts affecting research organizations in the U.S., including reductions in grants from the National Science Foundation. These financial constraints have also impacted staffing in research labs like the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory.

To raise awareness and secure funding for their research, the Marmot Project launched innovative campaigns like OnlyMarms on the platform OnlyFans, showcasing marmots on camera traps for subscribers. Despite raising over $120,000 in donations, the project acknowledges the temporary nature of such funding sources and has initiated a petition urging Congress to restore research funding.

While uncertainties loom over the future of the Marmot Project, efforts continue to ensure the continuation of vital research activities, with plans underway for the next Fat Marmot Week in 2027. Katie Adler remains hopeful that initiatives like these will foster greater appreciation for the resilience and survival strategies of marmots among the public.
