He stressed that these demands were never on Canada’s agenda and were deemed unacceptable to Canadians.

Regarding the automotive sector, Carney criticized the U.S.’s unfair treatment of Canadian-made parts and inconsistent tariff exemptions for certain vehicles. These late demands, if accepted, would have negatively impacted vehicle production in Canada over time.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford supported Carney’s decision to walk away from the negotiations, asserting that Canada is prepared to engage in a trade war and defend its interests against the U.S. Ford deemed the proposed deal detrimental to various sectors, including auto, steel, and manufacturing industries.

Carney also highlighted the U.S.’s attempts to undermine Canada’s sovereignty by imposing restrictions on future trade agreements. He emphasized that Canada values free trade and would not agree to terms that limit its ability to engage with other countries economically.

The Prime Minister criticized the Trump administration’s negotiation tactics, noting that the last-minute changes disrupted months of progress towards a fair trade agreement. He announced the implementation of reciprocal tariffs on U.S. goods as a response to the failed negotiations.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed disappointment over the U.S.’s imposition of tariffs on Canada and pledged to support measures to safeguard Canadian industries. He emphasized the importance of fair and tariff-free trade to protect Canadian workers and businesses.

Economist Trevor Tombe warned of potential job losses in Canada due to the tariffs, estimating significant impacts on various provinces. He highlighted the potential job losses in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, underscoring the broader economic consequences of the trade dispute.

Carney reassured that the government would support businesses affected by the tariffs and announced plans to release further details to assist those impacted. He emphasized the government’s commitment to assisting affected businesses beyond the current administration’s term.
