“Actor Ben McKenzie Exposes Cryptocurrency’s Dark Side”

Published on

In the realm of cryptocurrencies, the question of winners and losers takes center stage. Ben McKenzie, known for his role as Ryan Atwood in The O.C., has shifted his focus to what he deems “the largest Ponzi scheme in history”: cryptocurrency.

According to McKenzie, the cryptocurrency industry often sees a small group of insiders making substantial profits while the majority of regular investors end up losing money. This observation prompted McKenzie to delve into the industry, leading to his documentary titled Everyone Is Lying to You for Money, which received a limited theatrical release in April.

His interest in cryptocurrency sparked when a friend proposed investing in it without a clear explanation of its workings. Armed with an economics degree, McKenzie’s investigation exposed what he describes as the industry’s foundation built on empty promises.

In 2022, McKenzie testified before a U.S. Senate committee on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud. While some insiders criticize McKenzie’s documentary for sensationalizing negative narratives around cryptocurrency, McKenzie emphasizes the need for stricter regulations to safeguard investors.

In a candid conversation with guest host Lyndsay Duncombe, McKenzie shared insights from his documentary, highlighting the detrimental impact of cryptocurrency on men. He pointed out that cryptocurrency lures men with the promise of immense wealth while discouraging them from discussing losses, ultimately perpetuating a cycle of financial vulnerability.

Despite instances of individuals losing substantial amounts in cryptocurrency investments, some continue to believe in the potential of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. McKenzie attributes this persistence to psychological factors like the sunk-cost fallacy, where individuals feel compelled to continue investing to avoid acknowledging losses.

McKenzie’s documentary sheds light on the darker side of cryptocurrency, emphasizing that while the traditional financial system has its flaws, cryptocurrencies present an even riskier alternative. The challenge lies in conveying this message to investors who may be swayed by the allure of quick riches offered by cryptocurrencies.
