Syrians demonstrated this week to demand justice following the passing of Mohammad Ghamira, a Syrian citizen who died in a hospital after alleged mistreatment by security forces while in custody. This incident occurred less than two years after the new government pledged to move away from the systematic arbitrary detentions and abuses prevalent during the previous regime.
Ghamira’s family informed the authorities that the 29-year-old, a father of two, had hemophilia, a rare genetic disorder affecting blood clotting. He was detained for three days before his release on Aug. 9 and immediate transfer to a hospital, where he passed away a week later.
The death of Ghamira is seen as a test for Syria’s new government to uphold its commitment to accountability post the Assad regime’s long-standing rule. His demise led to peaceful demonstrations and sit-ins across the country this week, shedding light on numerous other reported cases of mistreatment in detention facilities since the new administration assumed power.
Fadel Abdulghany, the Executive Director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), emphasized the need for a unified, judicially supervised system to govern detention practices in the ongoing transition in Syria.
Ghamira, a former volunteer with the White Helmets, was detained on suspicion of theft by the Latakia Internal Security Command. Despite his family’s warnings regarding his medical condition, he was reportedly physically assaulted while in custody, leading to his tragic death at the Latakia University Hospital.
The Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, mourned Ghamira’s passing, attributing it to complications from cerebral and gastrointestinal hemorrhaging resulting from the alleged beating during his detention.
An investigation into Ghamira’s death was announced by Syria’s Interior Ministry, with seven personnel from the ministry detained for questioning. A police interrogator implicated in the incident has been referred for prosecution, while disciplinary actions against other involved officers are underway.
Rights groups, including the Syria Campaign and Families for Freedom, have called for an independent and transparent investigation into Ghamira’s death, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms to prevent future abuses and ensure accountability.
Despite promises of accountability by the interim government, reports from organizations like Syrians for Truth and Justice indicate that abuse continues in detention centers, highlighting the challenges in addressing widespread mistreatment and the need for comprehensive reforms.
