“Lost Tortoise Found 20km Away: Sahara Native Rescued in Manitoba Marsh”

African spurred tortoise, Molly, was discovered wandering slowly at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba, far from her native Sahara desert habitat. Oak Hammock staff rescued the hefty 36-kilogram tortoise after receiving reports of unusual sightings. Initially, they mistook her for a snapping turtle, a common species in Manitoba. However, a sighting on iNaturalist prompted a tortoise hunt, leading to Molly’s swift discovery.

The staff was surprised by Molly’s size and appearance in the parking lot. After her rescue, Molly enjoyed cucumbers and flower petals, guided tours, and attentive care until her owners were located. Molly’s family reclaimed her, expressing joy at her return. The family had raised Molly for 15 years, and she had escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations.

Despite the reunion, the mystery remains as to how Molly traversed 20 kilometers to reach the marsh. One theory suggests a well-meaning individual relocated her to the wetland, unaware of the tortoise’s needs. Another speculation is that Molly journeyed to the marsh independently. The staff marvel at Molly’s adventure and her safe return home.
