Roblox is experiencing a significant decline in its financial performance compared to previous years. The popular gaming platform has seen a market value decrease of approximately $97.5 billion Cdn over the past year, as indicated by stock market data. While Roblox attributes this downturn to shifts in user game preferences and challenges in appealing to older gamers, experts suggest that other factors may also be influencing the situation.
Aaron Langille, who oversees the game design and simulation program at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ont., commented, “I believe there are multiple factors at play here. The platform may be showing signs of aging, coupled with potentially unsuccessful decision-making.”
Roblox Corporation’s stock price has plummeted by about 70% compared to the same period last year, falling from $129.63 US ($180.67 Cdn) to $36.96 US ($51.51 Cdn). This decline followed an earnings call where company executives reported revenue below expectations.
For those unfamiliar with Roblox, it is a gaming and creation platform where users can engage with games created by other users. Launched in 2006, the platform has grown to encompass 151.5 million daily users and 3.5 million game developers, according to company data. The platform offers a variety of games, including racing, obstacle courses, shooters, platformers, and board games, predominantly multiplayer in nature.
The majority of Roblox users are younger individuals. Despite implementing identity and age verification earlier this year, Roblox stated in February that 35% of daily active users below 13 and 38% aged 13 to 17 accounted for more than half of all active players.
CEO David Baszucki and CFO Naveen Chopra acknowledged falling short of user spending expectations, particularly among those under 13. They attributed this shortfall to changes in Roblox’s game recommendation algorithm and the current popular games not generating revenue comparable to previous hits.
Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of young users on Roblox, given its text and voice communication features. Efforts are being made to broaden the platform’s appeal to older gamers amidst increasing scrutiny by governments and experts regarding user safety.
Roblox reached an agreement with the state of Nevada in June to enhance online safety measures for young users and allocate over $10 million US towards education and safety initiatives.
Yulia Nevskaya, an assistant professor of marketing at Queen’s University, suggested that safety concerns, such as the platform’s age and account verification rules, could be contributing to user base erosion and impacting game developer engagement.
Despite the recent financial challenges, Baszucki and Chopra highlighted positive developments during the earnings call, citing improved user retention due to algorithm changes and growth in international markets like Japan and India. They remain optimistic about the platform’s future, especially with increased diversity in user gaming preferences.
Cristiano Politowski, an assistant professor of computer science at Ontario Tech University, noted Roblox’s unique position in controlling its platform and suggested that the current setbacks are part of a strategic long-term plan.
