Caitlyn Moony shared her journey of relocating to Vancouver and her evolving relationship with the city. Originally from Johannesburg, she moved to Vancouver in 2018 with high hopes, inspired by the city’s reputation as one of the best places to live. However, her initial excitement waned as she struggled to adapt to the reality of life in Vancouver.

Despite the city’s natural beauty and charm, Moony faced challenges such as the lack of a strong social network and the pressure of having “Canadian experience” for job opportunities. Working long hours in a startup, living in a cramped basement suite, and feeling isolated added to her disillusionment with the city. She found herself comparing Vancouver unfavorably to the bustling cities she had previously lived in.

Loneliness and a sense of disconnect from the community further exacerbated her feelings of discontent. Even after seeking advice on where to find people, Moony struggled to feel a sense of belonging. The onset of the pandemic intensified her feelings of isolation, prompting her to leave for London in search of a more vibrant and bustling environment.

In London, Moony found the energy and vibrancy she craved, but she realized that Vancouver had quietly shaped her into a more contemplative and grounded individual. Despite its flaws, Vancouver had given her the space and stillness to introspect and grow. Ultimately, Moony found herself drawn back to Vancouver, acknowledging its imperfections but yearning for a sense of connection and belonging in the city she once struggled to embrace.
