“River Island Announces Closure Dates for 27 Stores”

Published on

River Island has officially announced the closure dates for 27 of its stores scheduled to shut down this month. The fashion retailer had previously disclosed plans to close a total of 33 stores as part of a significant restructuring effort approved by the High Court.

Among the initial list of 33 stores, branches in locations like Brighton, Edinburgh Princes Street, Great Yarmouth, and Stockton-on-Tees have already ceased operations in the final months of 2025. River Island has now revealed that an additional 27 stores will be closing by late January, including outlets in Norwich, Norfolk, and Workington, Cumbria, although specific closure dates for these stores are yet to be confirmed.

As part of its restructuring strategy, River Island is also reducing rents at 71 other stores. The clothing chain, which had 223 stores in the UK and Ireland before the court-approved rescue plan in August, is adapting to challenges in the retail landscape, such as declining footfall and sales attributed to intense competition and the shift towards online shopping.

The company reported a pre-tax loss of £32.3 million last year, accompanied by a 15% drop in turnover to £578.1 million. River Island’s legal representative, Matthew Weaver KC, acknowledged the persistent financial challenges faced by the company. CEO Ben Lewis emphasized the need for a transformation to align the business with evolving customer preferences and economic realities, aiming to secure its long-term profitability while minimizing job losses associated with store closures.
