Unlikely Nobel Peace Prize for Trump; Progress on Gaza Deal

Published on

No, it is highly unlikely that Donald Trump will receive the Nobel Peace Prize soon. Speculation arose following news of progress on a Gaza peace deal, but there are significant reasons why this is improbable.

One key factor is the Nobel Prize nomination deadline, which was on January 31. This means only the initial 20 days of Trump’s second term would have been considered for the prize this year, during which time he was primarily involved in staff dismissals.

Furthermore, the Nobel committee disapproves of public lobbying for the prize. Nina Græger, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, highlighted that the committee avoids succumbing to political pressure and prefers not to be seen as influenced by external forces. Græger expressed that Trump’s chances for the prize are slim due to his rhetoric not aligning with peace-promoting ideals.

In other news, progress has been made on a Gaza peace plan involving Hamas and Israel. The agreement includes the release of 20 hostages by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and the withdrawal of Israeli military forces from most of Gaza.

Despite Trump’s desire to announce this development first on Truth Social, an unexpected interruption during a public event prevented him from doing so. The interruption involved a note from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging Trump to approve a post on Truth Social to announce the Middle East deal.

Regarding Trump’s health, the White House announced he would undergo a routine checkup at Walter Reed Medical Centre the following day. While his previous checkup indicated excellent health, concerns have been raised about his well-being, especially given visible discolouration on his hand and instances of absence from public view.

Recent actions by Trump, such as calling for the imprisonment of political figures on social media, have raised concerns about authoritarian tendencies. Furthermore, his interactions with far-right influencers and statements about protesters have sparked controversy and criticism.

In a separate incident, a message posted on Truth Social calling for the prosecution of former FBI director James Comey was revealed to be a mistakenly shared direct message. This incident sheds light on the use of insecure communication channels for official matters.

The article also touches on political developments, including a dispute involving Arizona Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva and the Epstein files, as well as Speaker Mike Johnson’s opposition to Bad Bunny performing at the Super Bowl halftime show.
