England cricket icon Robin Smith has passed away at the age of 62. The former batsman, renowned for his 62 Test appearances for England, died in Australia while visiting for the Ashes series.
The heartbreaking news was disclosed by Smith’s close companion and ex-teammate from Hampshire, Kevan James, in an emotional interview with BBC Radio Solent.
Smith had been battling health issues, courageously sharing his struggles with alcoholism and depression. The exact cause of his demise remains undisclosed.
During his recent trip to Australia, Smith attended the first Ashes Test in Perth where he reunited with former England cricket colleagues Graham Gooch, David Gower, and Allan Lamb.
Known as ‘The Judge,’ Smith, a stylish and fearless right-handed batsman, made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1988 despite being born in South Africa. Notably, he scored two centuries during the subsequent Ashes series the following summer.
One of Smith’s standout Test performances was his top score of 175 in response to Brian Lara’s then record-breaking 375 runs in Antigua. His Test career concluded with a commendable tally of 4,236 runs at an average of 43.67, including nine centuries.
Apart from his Test achievements, Smith also represented England in 71 one-day internationals, notably contributing to the team’s journey to the World Cup final in 1992. His remarkable innings of 167 not out against Australia in 1993 stood as the highest ODI score by an English player until Alex Hales’ 171 against Pakistan in 2016.
Despite retiring from international cricket in 1996, Smith continued to play for Hampshire until 2003, accumulating an impressive 21 seasons with the club. He is widely recognized as one of Hampshire’s most exceptional players in history.
