As the fall season approaches, temperatures are dropping, prompting many to switch on their heating after months of dormancy.
Ryan Willdig, an expert from Heatforce, warns that UK households are overspending on energy bills due to a common mistake. He emphasizes that increasing the thermostat in cold weather does not heat a home faster, but rather wastes energy and money.
According to Willdig, every degree above 19-20 degrees Celsius can escalate heating costs by up to 10% annually. He advises against leaving the heating on low all day, emphasizing the efficiency of using it only when necessary.
To optimize heating efficiency, keep radiators off in unused rooms with closed doors to prevent heat loss. Avoid obstructing radiators with furniture or covers as it hinders heat circulation, leading to increased bills and strain on the boiler.
Regular boiler maintenance is crucial to ensure efficiency and prevent malfunctions. Willdig recommends scheduling annual boiler services in September to avoid breakdowns during peak winter usage.
Improving insulation in poorly insulated homes, especially in lofts, walls, and windows, can prevent heat loss. Simple solutions like draught excluders and radiator reflectors can yield long-term cost savings and improved heating efficiency.
Opting for these energy-saving practices can make a noticeable impact on both home warmth and monthly utility bills.
