A man convicted of child-related offenses, who was discovered near school children carrying a large quantity of candies, has managed to avoid imprisonment for violating a court order. Peter Crawford, aged 50, confessed to breaking the order twice and received a suspended four-month prison term at Laganside Magistrates Court in Belfast. Despite residing close to a residence for vulnerable individuals and children, Crawford was spared jail time. Initially planning to challenge the order, the disgraced civil servant from north Belfast admitted to the breaches.
His violations occurred on two occasions in October and November last year when he was found within 100 meters of children, including at a community center on the same street. Staff alerted the authorities after observing his suspicious behavior near a children’s play area, leading to the discovery of the bag of sweets during a search. Crawford’s attorney acknowledged his client’s wrongdoing, emphasizing his lack of social connections and the center’s aim to promote social engagement.
The court order prohibits Crawford from being in proximity to areas where children are present for educational or recreational activities. This is not the first time Crawford has breached the order, having previously been caught downloading illicit images and frequenting family-oriented places. In a previous court appearance in June, his residential address was documented as a flat near the Mater Dei home, accommodating vulnerable families under the Depaul homelessness charity.
While the police investigated a potential breach concerning his residence, it was determined that Crawford was not violating the court order by living at that location. Following a recent incident in June where he was discovered with additional indecent images, Crawford received another suspended sentence. The judge warned that further transgressions within the next two years could result in imprisonment. Crawford’s history includes an 18-month jail term in 2004 for possessing over 300 indecent images of children.
