“Alt-Nets Outshine Major Broadband Providers in UK”

Published on

A recent report from consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations in terms of service reliability. The study highlights that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value for money.

According to the findings, internet connection issues such as frequent dropouts are a common complaint among consumers, with slow download speeds and service outages also causing frustration. An overwhelming 91% of broadband users reported facing problems with their service in the past year, indicating a high rate of dissatisfaction.

Among the top broadband providers, Sky received criticism for frequent dropouts, affecting 38% of customers. Virgin Media also performed poorly, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection interruptions despite paying premium prices for their service. Additionally, Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with slow broadband speeds.

On the flip side, smaller providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for their reliability and service quality. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, surpassing competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky in customer satisfaction.

This trend aligns with previous research by Which? indicating that smaller broadband companies consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money. Which? encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service, with Ofcom’s broadband checker being a handy tool for comparison.

In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media highlighted their ongoing investments in improving service quality, emphasizing positive feedback from customers and independent data ranking them as a top broadband provider in various categories.

The findings underscore the importance of quality broadband service as a necessity rather than a luxury, empowering consumers to make informed choices and switch to providers that prioritize customer satisfaction.
