In just six months, the UK is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its communication network, marking one of the most substantial upgrades in decades. Millions of additional households are now being alerted about the impending changes. Come January 2027, the country’s dated copper phone system will be permanently retired, making way for Digital Voice, an innovative platform that utilizes broadband connections for phone calls, replacing the traditional landlines that have been in service for over a hundred years.

While the nationwide deadline is half a year away, the migration process is rapidly gaining momentum. BT’s Openreach, responsible for the UK’s largest broadband network, has announced the issuance of “stop sell” notices at an additional 112 telephone exchanges. This action prohibits broadband providers relying on the Openreach network, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, from selling or switching customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services in the affected regions.

According to Openreach, the “Stop Sell” directive is activated when a majority (75%) of premises served by a specific exchange have access to ultrafast Full Fibre. Subsequently, customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or alter their broadband or phone services must transition to a new digital service over the advanced Full Fibre network.

The recent expansion brings the total number of exchanges under the “Stop Sell” policy to 1,572, encompassing approximately 15.4 million residences and businesses nationwide. Despite the perceived challenges of transitioning to full fibre and Digital Voice, the shift promises numerous advantages, including enhanced broadband speeds, more dependable connections, and a contemporary phone service better suited for today’s digital landscape.
