In 1993, I first encountered Lucy Powell, a dynamic individual known for her assertiveness and distinctive style. At the age of 18, she was often seen challenging authority figures while garnering support from onlookers. Our paths crossed at Oxford University, where Lucy, akin to an Iron Lady, was a first-year student at Somerville College. Among our peers was Liz Truss, and Jacob Rees-Mogg stood out in his Victorian attire. Notably, George Osborne ran a whimsical student newspaper, assuming the role of a wizard agony aunt.
Lucy, a straight-talking Northerner with a hint of Mancunian swagger, was eager to challenge the status quo. As the Vice-President of the Student Union, I shared her passion for dance music, mischief-making, and social justice, forging a quick friendship.
Despite feeling out of place at Oxford, Lucy’s ‘Madchester’ background resonated with many of us from more humble beginnings, unfamiliar with elitist traditions. Her transition to King’s College London, leaving Oxford prematurely, seemed inevitable. Working as a Saturday manager at Top Shop on the Strand, Lucy thrived in the London environment, laying the foundation for her future role as Leader of the House.
A devoted supporter of Manchester City and the Labour Party from a young age, Lucy’s political journey began early, distributing leaflets while still in her youth. Our paths intersected again as I pursued a career in journalism, finding her actively involved at Labour HQ during the ’97 general election campaign and later supporting MPs Bev Hughes and Glenda Jackson.
Lucy’s irreverent attitude towards the corridors of power mirrored her disdain for Oxbridge. Known for her fairness and determination, she held everyone, from traffic violators to legislators, to account. Her resolve and unwavering commitment were evident in both personal and professional endeavors.
As a political figure, Lucy embodies qualities of empathy, resilience, and optimism. Her unwavering support for the marginalized and upbeat outlook set her apart. Through her various roles, from chief of staff to Deputy Leader, Lucy demonstrated her ability to lead with compassion and determination, earning respect across party lines.
Lucy’s multifaceted personality extends beyond politics, showcasing her culinary skills, driving precision, and resourcefulness in diverse settings. Her unwavering dedication to causes she believes in, coupled with her down-to-earth nature, fosters lasting friendships even among ideological differences.
Recently dismissed from her cabinet position, Lucy’s resolve to champion the working class remains unwavering. As the MP for Manchester Central, she embodies her city’s spirit, resonating with the community she serves. Lucy’s unwavering commitment to her roots and causes close to her heart cements her as a steadfast advocate for change.
