People over the age of 50 have shared their ultimate list of things they want to do, known as a bucket list. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that individuals in this age group currently have an average of seven items on their bucket lists and have already completed three of them since turning 50.
For many people, reaching the age of 50 has made their bucket list more significant, with more than half realizing the value of time and wanting to make up for lost opportunities. Interestingly, a good number mentioned feeling more adventurous now compared to their younger years in their 30s and 40s.
A study conducted by Newmedica to coincide with National Eye Health Week highlighted that popular bucket list aspirations include witnessing the Northern Lights, traveling on the Orient Express, and visiting all seven continents.
Many individuals also aim to pick up a new language, fulfill their lifelong dream of taking a helicopter ride, learn to play a musical instrument, float over picturesque landscapes in a hot air balloon, or swim with dolphins.
Reena Dave, a consultant ophthalmologist at the eye health clinic, expressed admiration for the energy and ambition displayed by many people in their 50s and beyond, embracing life with enthusiasm.
She noted, “Today’s older generations are healthier, more connected, and eager to pursue experiences that were once considered unattainable.”
Research shows that four out of ten individuals believe that achieving their bucket list goals helps them maintain good health. However, more than half are concerned that future health issues, such as joint pain, low energy levels, and deteriorating eyesight, could hinder their plans.
Reena emphasized the importance of addressing any potential health concerns promptly, including regular eye check-ups to detect any vision changes.
According to the survey, one-third of respondents have already undergone procedures like cataract surgery or laser treatment to preserve their eyesight and continue pursuing their bucket list adventures.
Reena Dave from Newmedica, a provider of advanced eye care for NHS and private patients, recommended, “It is essential to address any vision issues promptly to enjoy life to the fullest.”
She added, “If treatment is necessary, consult with your optician to explore the available options and make informed decisions about your eye health.”
