A unique partnership was announced this week in anticipation of the upcoming Children in Need appeal show. Scheduled to air in less than two months, the televised fundraising event is set to feature various celebrities. Tom Fletcher, aged 40, has revealed his collaboration with BBC Children in Need and publisher Puffin for this special occasion. The renowned McFly singer has penned a new picture book titled “Pudsey and the Thread of Hope,” illustrated by Joris Bergmans, to be launched in November.
Tom, known for his children’s book ventures, is endorsing the Challenge Yourself campaign for this year’s appeal. He embraced the challenge of creating something exceptional that embodies the essence of the charity and its iconic mascot.
The upcoming book is described as a “magical and moving” piece that commemorates 40 years of Pudsey’s impact and the charity’s significant role in aiding children and youth across the UK. The BBC has disclosed that for every paperback sold in the UK and Ireland, £1 will be contributed to Children in Need.
“Pudsey and the Thread of Hope” narrates the story of Jai, a child grappling with grief after losing his father. Together with Pudsey, Jai embarks on a journey of healing and hope, encountering other children united by a golden thread of kindness, discovering the transformative power of friendship, courage, and love.
Expressing his excitement, Tom stated, “I was thrilled to write this enchanting story that brings Pudsey’s wonderful qualities to life on the pages. Children and young people across the UK are facing daunting challenges without adequate support.”
The musician expressed optimism about raising funds through the project, emphasizing the importance of providing support, connection, and care in critical times.
Claire Hoyle, Chief Campaigns & Engagement Officer at BBC Children in Need, praised the book for capturing the essence of hope and resilience that Pudsey symbolizes, aiming to make children feel acknowledged, supported, and empowered.
Joe Marriott, the picture-book publisher at Puffin, expressed delight in collaborating with Tom to raise awareness about the valuable work done by Children in Need, sharing the heartwarming and optimistic story with the audience.
This isn’t Tom’s first collaboration with Children in Need. Last year, he and his wife, Giovanna Fletcher, designed the official t-shirt for the 2024 appeal, transforming it into a band-style tee.
“Pudsey and the Thread of Hope” will be available in paperback on November 6, with pre-orders now open. The BBC Children in Need 2025 appeal show is scheduled to be broadcast on November 14.
