Henrik Stenson, renowned for his Ryder Cup success, faces uncertainty in securing spots for certain DP World Tour tournaments. This shift follows his hefty fine of over £1 million for affiliating with the breakaway LIV Golf group.
As reported by The Telegraph, a previously undisclosed regulation now removes the 49-year-old’s guaranteed entry in events like the BMW PGA Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, and the Scottish Open. The adjustment stems from a significant downgrade in the qualification criteria, impacting stalwart players such as Stenson.
Previously, golf legends like Stenson could secure exemptions for Rolex Series events due to their status, with top earners on the career money list usually earning Category 5 berths. However, they now find themselves relegated to Category 11a, significantly lowering their priority for tournament qualification.
Stenson currently ranks seventh on the career money list, having amassed over £28 million in earnings. Following his expulsion from LIV Golf and subsequent ban, he is making a comeback to the tour after formalities.
Notably, the revised rule affects not just Stenson but also fellow golf stalwarts Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Paul Casey, introducing uncertainty in their tournament participation.
Despite finishing 49th in the season standings, Stenson, a former Open champion, faced expulsion from LIV Golf for his demotion.
While there’s speculation that Stenson could still feature in elite events through invitations, reports indicate that at least one LIV player was denied entry to the upcoming Desert Classic in January.
In a separate victory, Rory McIlroy clinched the Race to Dubai title at the DP World Tour, securing the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth consecutive year. Surpassing Seve Ballesteros, McIlroy now aims to level Colin Montgomerie’s record, expressing gratitude for the support and aspirations to set new milestones in European golf.
